Private Online High School Profiles

Distance Learning Articles : Private Online High School Profiles From Jamie Littlefield

Private online high schools are owned by corporations and often operate on a for-profit basis. While private online high schools can be expensive, they tend to offer more flexibility than government-run programs. Just as traditional private schools vary, each private online school offers a different program aimed at a specific set of students. There are schools for the gifted as well as those who need remedial assistance. The private online high schools in this list are all regionally accredited (the most widely-respected form of accreditation in the United States).

The University of Miami Online High School (UMOHS)

The University of Miami Online High School (UMOHS)

How does online schooling work?
The University of Miami Online High School (UMOHS) is a fully accredited private high school that provides students with the flexibility to complete their courses anytime from anywhere in the world. All of their assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects are completed online. Each student has a teacher for each course, with whom he/she communicates by e-mail, instant message, and telephone. UMOHS Independent Study (I/S) students may contact an instructor by e-mail or phone.

Is UMOHS accredited?
UMOHS is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA). All core courses are NCAA approved.

What happens once the student is accepted?
UMOHS students may begin their course work any time of year. Once the application is accepted, the admissions representative will discuss course selection with the student and parent or guardian. Once a start date is decided, a UMOHS representative will call the student at the arranged time and review course navigation, student handbook information and expectations for the school year.

Where are UMOHS graduates accepted to college?
UMOHS students have been accepted and received scholarships to Alabama, Auburn, Barry, California Santa Cruz, Colarado, Columbia, Florida, Gettysburg, George Washington, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, Lynn, Maryland, Purdue, Miami, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Purdue, Stanford, Southern California, Spring Hill, South Carolina, St. Mary's, Temple, Texas, Texas Tech, Virginia, Wagner and Wake Forest.

Can a student transfer mid-year?
Yes. University of Miami Online High School will review the student's transcripts and place the student in the appropriate courses and at the appropriate place within those courses. Student will not be required to retake the areas of study they have already mastered. Students are responsible for the UMOHS final. In order to receive a diploma from UMOHS, students must successfully complete a minimum of six, one-credit courses through the UMOHS program, regardless of the number of credits earned at other schools.

Do you accept part-time students?
Yes, Students may take 1-7 courses at any given time with UMOHS. Currently, part-time students take some classes with UMOHS and the remainder with their home school. UMOHS credits may be transferred to other accredited public and private high schools.

What if the student has questions or problems while taking a course?
Students enrolled in the UMOHS program may contact their teachers by a toll-free phone number, e-mail and instant message with questions or problems that may arise. Students enrolled in the UMOHS Independent Study (I/S) program may contact an instructor by e-mail or phone. Technical support is available to all UMOHS and I/S students.

How do you prevent cheating?
Most of our assignments require critical thinking, and therefore, cannot easily be replicated by other students. UMOHS has many technological checks and balances that would discover cheating and plagiarism.

What is the difference between UMOHS and traditional brick-and-mortar college-preparatory schools?
There is no difference in the college-preparatory curriculum between UMOHS and traditional high schools. There is a significant difference in the flexibility offered to all UMOHS students.

Is UMOHS less challenging than other schools?
No. Although UMOHS provides a flexible alternative for students, it is not an easier option than traditional schools. All courses are written at or above grade level and require an average of one to two hours of focused study on a daily basis to complete one course within the traditional annual or semester time frame. Our courses engage students in real-life projects, requiring the use of critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply the knowledge they have acquired.

How does a parent or guardian learn about the students' academic progress?
Parents have access to their children's courses 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They can always view complete and incomplete assignments, as well as their children's grades. The UMOHS academic advisor is continually monitoring the student's progress and will contact the parent if the student is falling behind.

Who are UMOHS students?
The UMOHS learning community includes athletes, performers, students who benefit from individualized instruction, students who prefer to accelerate, international students seeking an American high School diploma, part-time students, students who travel, home school and summer school students.

Can a student complete work while traveling?
Absolutely! Students can download their course work and assignments via the internet from anywhere and at any time.

What are the attributes of a successful online learner?
A successful online learner is motivated and self-disciplined, has time management skills, desires control over his or her learning, and enjoys project-based learning.

What are the benefits of collaborating with the University of Miami division of continuing studies & education?
These benefits include bringing the expertise of UM's professors and graduate students to our curriculum development process, providing our students with access to the University of Miami's excellent pre-college programs, and other exciting new learning opportunities.

Why should a student take online courses?
Taking an online course in high school is one of the wisest decisions that college-bound students can make. If they have successfully completed courses with us, they have mastered many of the skills they will need to continue to be online learners. They will have learned about time management, self-discipline, and effective written communication.

between a good job and a job that simply pays the bills. Online
high schooling provides an excellent opportunity for anyone who
has left high school early to get a diploma while maintaining
current commitments. Classes can be taken at the student's
convenience any time of the day so giving up a job to re-attend
high school isn't typically something that can be afforded.

Those who left high school early are not the only ones to
benefit from an online education. The age of the internet has
broadened horizons in all directions for people from all walks
of life. Taking online classes can be achieved from any location
in the world that offers an internet connection and a computer.
Online classes can be taken at the student's own pace providing
the opportunity to accelerate much faster than normal or at a
slower pace. The convenience is at the student's disposal making
online classes one of the most popular means today to get a high
school diploma.

With the rise in home schooling in recent years, obtaining extra
online courses is extremely beneficial. Home-schooled students
often experience difficulty in having prospective colleges and
employers recognize the home schooling diploma. Taking advantage
of online educational classes can provide the necessary
credentials required to be valid and accepted. There are many
branches of government and colleges that don't recognize a
home-schooled diploma. The alternative to taking online classes
for those that fit into this category was to obtain a GED. While
the GED is mostly an accepted form of high school diploma, many
times it is not as highly accepted as a regular diploma.

For those students who are highly motivated and in a traditional
school setting, online courses offers them the ability to finish
high school early. Accelerating through online classes offers
these students to work at their ability level and not be
dependant upon other people's learning progress. Online classes
and courses are recognized and given by accredited education
systems and therefore can be easily transferred to potential
colleges.

Online education courses offer a great option for people of all
educational backgrounds. Completing the requirements to obtain a
high school diploma has never been more convenient. No matter
the age, color or shape, everyone can benefit from online
classes. Incorporating online schooling into any hectic schedule
can be as easy as waiting until the kids are in bed and studying
in the comforts of home. Complete high school with online
classes by the simple method that can fit into any lifestyle.
